Does Apple Health (Washington Medicaid) cover ABA therapy?

Short answer

Yes. Apple Health, Washington's Medicaid program, covers Applied Behavior Analysis for clients who are evaluated by an approved Center of Excellence provider and receive an ABA order. Coverage runs through the client's managed care plan, or through fee-for-service for clients without a plan. Evergreen Pathways is listed in the HCA's fee-for-service ABA directory.

Who qualifies

The Health Care Authority lists two requirements: be evaluated by an Apple Health approved COE provider, and receive a prescription for ABA therapy. The rule behind it, WAC 182-531A-0400, adds that the documentation must show a functional impairment or delay in communication, behavior or social interaction that gets in the way of home, school or community life, or that endangers the client or others.

Managed care or fee-for-service: which one is your child in?

Most Apple Health children are enrolled in a managed care plan. Your card or your ProviderOne account shows the plan name. If there is a plan, the plan decides which ABA providers are in network and handles authorization. If there is no plan (common for children in foster care or with certain other coverage), your child is in fee-for-service and can choose from the HCA's fee-for-service ABA provider directory.

Where Evergreen Pathways fits

Evergreen Pathways LLC appears in the HCA's Apple Health fee-for-service ABA provider directory for King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston and Kitsap counties, ages 2 to 22, home setting. If your child is in a managed care plan, call us and we will check whether we are in network for that plan and explain the authorization steps before anything starts. We do not list plan names on this site until they are confirmed with each plan.

What Apple Health expects from an ABA provider

Under the HCA program, the ABA provider completes intake assessments, writes an individualised treatment plan, requests prior authorization, tracks progress with measurable goals, and reduces services as the child gains skills. The HCA describes ABA as personalised: goals, settings and hours depend on each person's needs.

Common questions

Is there a cost to families on Apple Health?

Apple Health generally has no premiums or copays for covered children's services. Confirm with your plan or the HCA for your specific coverage.

Does Apple Health cover ABA at home?

Yes. The HCA directory lists each provider's settings. Evergreen Pathways is listed for the home setting.

What happens at 21?

Apple Health's ABA rules change at 21: a new diagnosis at 21 or older must come from a neurologist, psychiatrist or psychologist. Ask your plan what continues after 21 and plan the transition early.
